​The Junior League of Summit Hosting Maternal Health Awareness Seminar

The Junior League of Summit will be hosting a Maternal Health Awareness Seminar at the Beacon UU in Summit on Thursday, March 14th from 7-8pm. The evening will begin with a screening of "Toxic: A Black Woman's Story," a short film about the impacts of stress and inequities on black women and infant mortality. Following the film, guest speaker Mariekarl Vilceus-Talty, President and CEO of Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey (PMCH), will discuss the amazing work that PMCH does for New Jersey, share her personal experiences, and end with a Q&A session.

The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income country in the world. Black women in New Jersey are seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. This is greater than the national average.

Ahead of the 2024 Black Maternal Health Week, the Junior League of Summit is teaming up with PMCH and Beacon UU to raise awareness around these inequities in the community and strive toward making New Jersey an equitable place in the nation to deliver and raise a baby.
