Martial Artist, Breast Cancer Survivor Laura Newton to Share Story of Survival & Determination

Texas mom tells of how following her dream led her to be a fighter and survivor

SUMMIT, NJ – OCTOBER 2017 Laura Newton, a martial artist and breast cancer survivor from Texas, will share how her determination led her not only to beat her disease, but to also realize her love of Muay Thai boxing, at “Fight Like a Girl,” a special presentation at Overlook Medical Center on October 20.

The event, sponsored by Overlook’s community health department, as well as the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Overlook, will give the public, including breast cancer survivors and members of the health care community, to hear directly from Newton, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Newton was diagnosed in 2010, just as she was delving into the world of martial arts. Instead of being deterred, she vowed to herself to first beat the disease, and then return to the sport she loves. Following her treatment, which included a double-mastectomy, she returned to her training. Learning Muay Thai boxing, which combines standing-up strikes with clinching techniques, and jiu-jitsu. Newton has competed in Thai boxing, as well as competitive rock-climbing, and today coaches and teaches.

“I love sharing with people the obstacles I have overcome,” Newton said. “Thai boxing can be intimidating, but after the cancer, I thought, ‘you have no idea what I’ve been through. I just beat cancer. I am strong enough. After that, it was just looking forward and not looking back.’”

The event will be held in Bouras Auditorium at Overlook Medical Center, 99 Beauvoir Avenue, Summit, NJ, from 7:00 to 9:00pm. For more information, call 908-522-5355 or email Alexandra.green@atlantichealth.org.
