Mountainside Police Deliver Baby Girl In Driveway Of Borough Home

MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ — Was it the luck of the Irish or great police work? Or both? Early on St. Patrick's Day morning, Mountainside police officers delivered a baby girl in the driveway of a borough home.

At 1:54 a.m. on March 17, officers responded to a home on Route 22 for a report of a woman in labor. Connie Lorenz's husband Brandon, a Springfield Police Officer, was helping her to the family car to drive her to the hospital when her labor began progressing too quickly, Mountainside Police reported.

Mountainside Police Officer Stephen King quickly arrived on scene where he removed his jacket lying it on the ground for her to lay down on. Corporal Donald Amberg and Police Officer Stephen DeVito then arrived to assist King.

The father and three Mountainside officers took on the role of a labor and delivery team welcoming the Lorenz's new daughter, McKenna, weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces into the world, police reported.

Shortly after McKenna was born, the Mountainside Rescue Squad and the Atlantic Health Paramedics arrived taking over care of the mother and baby. Both were transported to Overlook Hospital in Summit where they are reported to be in good health.

The officers were thanked for at the Borough Council meeting on March 21 for their help by the Lorenz family. The officers also were given a pink stork citation bar from Mountainside Police Chief Allan Attanasio.
