Oak Knoll Students Kick off Summer with Annual Sacred Heart Camp

SUMMIT — More than 20 Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child students, one recent graduate and five staff members volunteered the week of June 18 during the eighth-annual Sacred Heart Summer Fun Program at Sacred Heart School in Jersey City.

The Summit school’s student volunteers in grades 10 to 12 planned and organized themes and various activities for the more than 50 Sacred Heart School students who attended the week-long camp.

The themes throughout the week were "Fun and Games," "Where the Wild Things Are," and "Splash Zone, and included activities such as dance, carnival games, arts and crafts, relay races, water coloring, and much more.

Oak Knoll Upper School girls worked in teams to help facilitate each event for the Sacred Heart students, who ranged in age from grades 3 to 7.

"It's a wonderful leadership opportunity," said Kathleen Lynch, chair of Oak Knoll's Theology Department and director of Campus Ministry.

Lynch said the Upper School students learned about planning, flexibility, commitment and service, when it came to organizing a program of such magnitude.

Throughout the camp, each child and volunteer donned the Sacred Heart Summer Fun Program t-shirt. The shirts featured a logo created by Oak Knoll alumnae Christina Abruzzo '08, who incorporated both logos from Oak Knoll and Sacred Heart.

"They learn a lot from these kids at Sacred Heart," Ms. Lynch said. "They bond with these kids. This is a huge connection between the students."

Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child is an independent Catholic school enrolling boys and girls in kindergarten through grade six; and young women only in grades seven through 12.  For more information about Oak Knoll, please visit www.oakknoll.org or call 908-522-8109.
