[PHOTOS] A Look Inside The Summit Fire Department
Patch recently took a tour of the firehouse. Check out our photos and take a look inside the building where local firefighters work, train, eat and rest while on call.
There's a lot of history inside the Summit Fire Department. The original building was constructed in 1901, about 32 years after the city of Summit was officially incorporated.
The two-story building — which serves as the department's headquarters — is the place where on-duty firefighters send their days when they're not out in the community responding to emergency calls or providing services to the public, such as fire prevention.
In addition to the dispatch center on the first floor — which serves as the 911 call center for the entire city — the building also has large bays where fire trucks are housed and maintained.

The second floor features a meeting room used by emergency management officials, as well as a kitchen and sleeping quarters for firefighters. The building also houses a gym, where members of the department can workout, in order to stay in shape — which is necessary in order to do their jobs effectively.
In the rear of the building, the department houses a small training facility that resembles a small house. During training, firefighters fill the building with non-toxic smoke and perform various drills involving everything from search and rescue to managing the hose lines.
