Police Submit August Activity Report to Council

The Summit Police Department has submitted an activity report for the month of August to common council, which will meet tonight at 7:30 at city hall.

During the month of August, the police responded to 1,697 calls for service, down from 1,887 in August of 2009. Of the 1,697 calls, 113 were for crimes, 19 for escorts and 1,565 for incidents.

Calls for service for the entire year through August are 16,190, up from 15,625 from 2009. Total mileage clocked in August was 16,596 miles and 133,060 for the year to date.

Of the calls police responded to, 43 were accidents involving property damage, 12 were accidents involving property damage of less than $500, 11 were accidents with injuries, one pedestrian accident, and one accident involving a DWI arrest. Summit Police also issued 296 moving summonses and 449 parking summonses.

Police investigated one robbery, five grand larcenies, three assaults, four disorderly persons, one false alarm at a bank, 29 business false alarms, and 72 residential false alarm also in August.

The year to date for 2010 totals three accidents involving a bicycle or moped, 10 pedestrian accidents, one fatal accident, 11 accidents involving DWI arrests, 52 grand larcenies, one robbery, four auto thefts, and 40 assaults.

A report of arrests made was also included. Police made 27 arrests in August, four of which were of juveniles. The arrests include two juveniles arrested for robbery, one person arrested for fraud, six arrests for narcotics including one juvenile, and three people charged with Driving Under the Influence.

Police charged a total of 247 people, including 34 juveniles, in 2010 through August, which is seven more arrests than in 2009.

Council will also introduce an ordinance tonight that would expand the uses allowed on the first floor of central retail business district properties. No new uses are proposed, howver uses currently only allowed above the first floor would be allowed on the first floor if the ordinace is approved.
