Sideline Report: Summit Girls LAX Looks to Defend County Title

The Hilltoppers will face Oak Knoll in today's Union County Championship game.

On the heels of winning the Union County Division, defeating Kent Place 16-7 on May 7, Girls Lacrosse Coach Mike Walsh and his team are looking to defend their county title when they take on Oak Knoll today in the Union County Championship game — weather permitting, of course.

"We would really like to defend our title," Walsh said Thursday during practice on the turf field behind Summit High School.

The coach said the Hilltoppers are also looking forward to the opportunity to take on the Oak Knoll team — their in-town rivals — who bested them 6-4 on April 22.

"Not every teams gets a chance to get a payback in a game that you've lost, so I think that's a primary goal for us," Walsh said.

Walsh added that the girls are also hoping to win a state sectional title — something the team has not been able to do since the sectional format began.

According to the coach, one of the team's biggest assets is it's offense and the players' ability to limit the number of shots their opponents are able to take and the types of shots they take on the goal.

"We're very strong in the goal. I think we've been very successful in terms of limiting teams in terms of their options," Walsh said. "And on the offensive end, I think we're very good with sharing the ball."

The coach pointed out that there are about 11 girls on the varsity team who have at least 10 or more points so far this season.

The Union County Tournament Finals for girls lacrosse are set to take place at 5 p.m. tonight at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark.
