Soldier Tells of Captivity and Forced Labor

The little-known story of American soldiers forced into slavery by Nazi captors

Local businessman Bob Max did not speak much about his experiences as a soldier in World War II until his grandsons began asking questions. Gradually, he began to open up about the horrific things he witnessed and suffered when he was captured by the Nazis and forced into slave labor. Eventually he determined to record his memories of captivity and escape for future generations, for whom this part of the story of Nazi Germany is not well known. The result is Max's recently published memoir, The Long March Home: An American Soldier's Life as a Nazi Slave Laborer.

Max will tell some of the stories from his memoir at a book signing on April 8th at Congregation Beth Hatikvah, 36 Chatham Road in Summit. Brunch will be served at 10:30 am, followed by the presentation and book signing. Books are available from the publisher, Hellgate Press, and online retailers. Admission is free.
