Both Hilltoppers lacrosse teams defeated their opponents to win the UCIAA championship finals Tuesday night. The boys defeated Westfield 9-5; girls bested Oak Knoll 10-9.

The Hilltoppers dominated the 2013 Union County Tournaments Finals Tuesday, with both the varsity boys and girls teams taking down their opponents in heated match-ups at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark.

Led by top scorers Austin Carbone and Liam Mennig, the Hilltoppers went into halftime with a 6-2 lead over Westfield. Carbone, Mennig and Matt Maier had two goals each in the first half. Goalie Scott Caputo had two saves in the first half, but also gave up two goals to the Blue Devils.

Westfield put two more points on the board early in the third quarter, scoring two quick goals. Summit's offense picked up again in the fourth quarter, with Carbone scoring a goal (Mennig assisted) to bring the score to 7-4, with just over 9 minutes remaining. Earlier in the evening, the girls lacrosse team took on rival school Oak Knoll. The neighboring team defeated the Hilltoppers earlier in the season. Summit Girls Lacrosse Coach Mike Walsh said the team, once again, showed a lot of resilience during the UCIAA final.

"They just showed a lot of resilience tonight," Walsh said after the game. "Playing a tough schedule as we do prepared us to not panic and keep plugging away."

The Hilltoppers went into the second half trailing Oak Knoll by two points. The girls recovered in the second half, scoring 7 points to bring the final score to 10-9.

"Both teams worked really hard out there and we were fortunate to have the momentum swing our way tonight," Walsh said.
