Summit Eagle Scout Beautifies Twin Maples Landscape

Sean McTernan completes community service project at Summit's historic estate

Sean McTernan completed his Eagle Scout community service project to beautify the grounds of the historic Twin Maples estate. As part of the volunteer project, he and his fellow scouts from Boy Scout Troop 67 of Summit planted two red maples to replace the bygone trees that originally gave Twin Maples its name.

Twin Maples is a Colonial Revival estate house built in 1908 and listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. It is owned and maintained by The Fortnightly Club of Summit, a fundraising organization that awards college scholarships to local students.

Sean explained “This year marks the 125th year of the Fortnightly Club - a women's service club that has done so much for the good of Summit. Now it is time to do something in return.”

Sean raised funds and enlisted the help of twelve scouts to plant the maple trees, as well as roses, shrubs, perennials and an ornamental garden tree. They also installed an irrigation system and built a cedar bench.

The Fortnightly Club’s president Terry Andrews said “Twin Maples has its twin maples again! Thank you to Sean and the scouts for doing a wonderful job to beautify the grounds. We’d also like to thank everyone in our community who donated funds to help with the project.”
