Summit Fire Department Honoring Fallen Firefighters Sunday

SUMMIT, NJ – The Summit Fire Department is participating in Bells Across America, a moment of remembrance to honor the 119 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2018 on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 10 a.m.

Bells will ring from coast to coast to start the memorial ceremony as a grateful nation pauses to honor fallen firefighters. A brief ceremony will be held outside fire headquarters in Summit following the ringing of bells on Sunday.

“The Summit Fire Department joining communities across the nation to ring bells in unison in tribute to fallen firefighters,” said Summit Fire Chief Eric Evers. “We are thankful for the religious and spiritual leaders in our community that will join us and participate in a moment of remembrance to honor our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”

For 37 consecutive years, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation memorial weekend has been held in Emmitsburg, Maryland to honor firefighters who have given their lives protecting the communities they serve. A team of Summit firefighters, Battalion Chief Paul Imbimbo, Lieutenant Brian Harnois, Firefighter Matthew Lemons and two retired members Deputy Chief Rick DeGroot and Battalion Chief Joe Wurtzbacher will travel to Emmitsburg before the Sunday ceremony to help organize and plan the event.
