Summit Hilltoppers Head To ‘Superbowl’ On Sunday

SUMMIT, NJ — For the first time in the team history, the Summit Hilltoppers youth football C-team will be heading to the championship “Superbowl” game on Sunday.

The team, made up of sixth- and seventh-graders, will kickoff against Sparta on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Perth Amboy High School, 300 Eagle Ave., in Perth Amboy. Admission is free to spectators.

“They worked really hard and I am really proud of the way they worked all year,” said Matt DeFonzo, who has been coach for the past 18 years. “They just kept improving every week.”

The Hilltoppers season began on Aug. 15 where they played eight regular season games and won all but one. They continued on into the playoffs where they won both games. On Sunday, it was the finals where the Hilltoppers won and took the title as the National Conference Champions for the New Jersey Suburban Youth Football League.

“It wasn’t easy but we did it,” DeFonzo said of the team making it this far. “They worked really, really hard through hot weather, cold weather and pouring rain.”
