Summit Sailing Team Qualifies For Championship

SUMMIT, NJ – The wind was at the backs of the Summit High School varsity sailing team as they finished ninth out of 16 teams in the Fleet Racing Qualifier for the NJ League in Toms River last Saturday.

According to the school district, Summit struggled with the light air early in the morning but the team turned it around in the afternoon with three finishes in the top five. Overall, Summit finished ninth out of 16 teams on the water which secured them a position for the team at the MASSA Silver Fleet Championship to be held on Oct. 20 and 21 in Toms River.

The team of Mia Chmelar, Sean Groskoph, Malcolm Harrison, Sophie Lusty and Hannah Mercurio were commended by the school for an excellent effort.

On Sunday, Summit returned to Toms River for the Fall Team Racing Qualifier. Summit finished in fourth place, beating Christian Brothers Academy in the final race of the day. According to the district, the final leg of the final race was particularly exciting with the Summit team working together to finish first and second to secure the fourth place overall finish.

Summit sailors Avery Anderson, Quinn Collins, Jack Greengrass, Sean Groskoph, Malcolm Harrison, Evan Hybl and Peter Tully were congratulated by the district for participating.

The Summit High School varsity sailing team practices in Perth Amboy on Thursdays and Saturdays, holding race days with Perth Amboy High School, Chatham High School, and Oak Knoll on Tuesdays.
