Summit Sailors Secure Third Place At Silver Championship

Summit Varsity Sailing team secured a third place win in the MidAtlantic Scholastic Sailing Association fall racing silver championship.

SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit High School Varsity Sailing team secured a third place win in the MidAtlantic Scholastic Sailing Association fall fleet racing silver championship on Saturday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Toms River Yacht Club in Toms River.

Eighteen schools in five states from New York to Virginia competed in the championship regatta. Each school has to qualify from within its own local league to earn a berth at the regatta in Toms River.

Senior captain Malcolm Harrison and junior skipper Sean Groskoph sailed in the A fleet completing 10 races with a best finish of second place in race four. Senior captain Mia Chemlar crewed with junior skippers Sophie Lusty and Hannah Mercurio in the B fleet, also finishing 10 races. Top finishes by B fleet skippers include seventh place in races six and eight by Mercurio and first place finishes in races one and nine by Lusty.

“In a fleet race, all of the schools race against each other,” said Summit High School sailing coach John Groskoph. “Each team enters an A boat and a B boat consisting of a skipper and a crew with the final results being the combination of its A and B division racing scores. Our team took advantage of the very shifty breeze combined with strong current and had several great starts. They worked very hard for this result and I am very proud of them.”
