SUMMIT, NJ — Gov. Phil Murphy suggested a week ago Tuesday that people should be aware of increasing cases of young people and younger adults with coronavirus, and how that will factor into school reopenings. He noted that the increases in cases show that young people can spread the virus to other people, even if their symptoms are usually less severe.

Some towns, like Westfield and Hoboken, have been advising their teens and younger adults to get tested, after the towns saw increases among young adults attending parties.

But as of Monday, Summit was reporting no new cases in the last few days. The city said their total of residents testing positive remains at 224 since the pandemic began.

One case in two weeks

On July 3, the city had had only one new case in two weeks, as was the way in several New Jersey towns before recent reopenings and travel to states with spikes. In fact, nearby Westfield had a two-week period in mid-June without a case.

Seventeen Summit residents have passed away due to the virus since the pandemic began in March, none recently.

On Facebook a week ago Sunday, the city noted, "June began with 205 cases and ended with 215. That's 10 cases in 30 days. Right now we are at six cases in 12 days. Let's keep our numbers down. Remind those around you, particularly young adults to wear a mask."

SubscribeSome North Jersey cities have said that their contract tracing showed that an uptick was due to out-of-state travel.

States like Texas, Florida, and Arizona are seeing a record number of hospitalizations.

Last week, Gov. Phil Murphy added four states to the list of 18 states that New Jersey residents must quarantine after visiting, and removed Delaware. (More here.)

The death toll in New Jersey has climbed to more than 13,700, with daily increases of 20 to 50 in July. But this rate is down from New Jersey's peak: a high of 460 deaths in 24 hours on April 30, or one person every three minutes. Murphy has noted that some of the newer deaths are being counted now from past months, as it took time to investigate them.

On July 15, Murphy ordered residents to wear masks outdoors in areas where they must be near other people.
