Summit Sewer Blockages Linked To Flushables, Cooking Oil
Summit residents are being asked to dispose of adult and baby wipes, feminine hygiene products and cooking oil in the garbage.

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit has been experiencing blockage issues with its sanitary sewer system caused by residents flushing adult and baby wipes, feminine hygiene products and cooking oil.
"Although these items are often labeled as biodegradable, when flushed, wipes and feminine products can create massive blockages in the sewer system and potentially cause problems for homeowners," the city announced.
Residents are being asked to dispose of these products in the trash rather than the toilet. The same goes for cooking oil, as it can clog pipes and eventually pollute local waterways. Residents should avoid disposing cooking oil in the kitchen sink and instead allow it to cool and throw it in the garbage.
