Today from Bedtime Math: Dress Like an Astronaut

Try this fun math challenge with your kids!

When you pick out your outfit every morning, you’re usually choosing between these pants and that skirt, or this shirt and that sweater. What if you threw an astronaut suit into the mix? On April 8 in New York City people will be able to buy leftover space suits and spaceship equipment at an “auction.” An auction is a sale where instead of sticking a price on each item, the auctioneers let people call out whatever they’re willing to pay, and whoever will pay the most wins it. Some of these suits are pretty cool – one of them is sewn from a silvery fabric made by 3M, the same company that makes Post-It notes. It isn’t easy to move around in these suits, but Bonhams, the company running the auction, thinks they will sell for thousands of dollars. It might be cheaper to find yourself an astronaut costume at the store – either way, you’ll look out of this world.

Now here's today's math~

Wee ones: At this wild auction you can bid on 2 spacesuits, 2 spaceship control panels, and a little model of a lunar rover. How many things can you try to buy?

Little kids: If The Mercury spacesuit sells for $12,000 and the Soviet Strizh spacesuit sells for $15,000, which one sells for more?  Bonus: For how much more?

Big kids: It’s hard to wear these heavy spacesuits. If the spacesuit weighs 50 pounds more than you do, how much does it weigh?  Bonus: These suits are pretty old, too. The Strizh suit was made in 1988, and the Mercury is even older, from 1959. How much older is the Mercury suit?

Wee ones: 5 space items.

Little kids: The Soviet suit sells for more.  Bonus: $3,000 more.

Big kids: Different for everyone…add 50 to your weight in pounds.  Bonus: 29 years older.

And a big thank-you to Chad R. for this great topic!
