Trevino Looks to Set New Path for Girls Volleyball

The Summit Girls Volleyball team looks to improve upon a sub-par effort from last season and with a new coach at the helm, intends to make that happen.

Summit, which finished 8-13 last season, welcomes Pedro Trevino to lead the team on a new path.

Trevino, with more than 20 years of experience as a player, coach and referee, is also a varsity men's volleyball assistant coach at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen.

With six seniors and 10 juniors, Trevino inherits a team with experience and looks to get off to a good start.

"I am really excited about this season," Trevino said, who also played his college ball as the starting setter for NJIT in Newark for four seasons. "I believe we have the talent to compete in our conference and to qualify for the state tournament. Each day we are getting better and that is a credit to each player on the team."

Leading Summit is senior outside hitter Jeanelle Augustin, who led the squad with 25 blocks last season and fellow senior outside hitter Allie Wernsing, who was second on the team in kills with 66. Junior middle Nicole Johnson looks to follow up her stellar sophomore season, where she led the team with 51 aces and 84 kills. Sophomore middle Lindsay Leiter recorded 0.82 aces and 1.37 kills per set as a freshman.

"I am looking for Augustin to have a great year," Trevino added. "She is a very talented player and I feel that the team feeds off of her emotion."

Summit's season begins with a tournament in Madison on Sept. 11 and opens the regular season with a home match Sept. 13 against Linden.
