Richard Rodda Community Center

The Teaneck Historical Society will sponsor a free guided walking tour, “When War Planes Crashed Over Teaneck,” Sun. May 17, beginning 10:30 a.m. from the Richard Rodda Center, 250 Colonial Court, Teaneck. Professor Daniel Z.Levin, amateur local historian and Teaneck resident, will lead the two-hour tour. On May 24, 1942, nearly five months after Pearl Harbor and with German U-boats reportedly sighted from New Jersey beaches, two fighter planes crashed over Teaneck. People thought the township was under attack as debris rained down on homes. Houses were in flames, but there were no fatalities. Some considered it the “first taste of modern war.”
“It’s an unusual local piece of history,” said Professor Levin. “We’ll consider what the newspapers reported, what my interviews with the pilots’ sons revealed and what the Air Force’s secret report—classified for more that 50 years—disclosed.” 
A resident of Teaneck since 1998, Professor Levin has a B.A. degree in American history and is a faculty member at Rutgers University Business School.
Walk-ins are welcome. People can join in or leave the tour at any time. The route will go from the Rodda Center to Julia Street, then south along Queen Anne Rd. to Cherry Lane, before returning to the Center.
The Teaneck Historical Society is dedicated to celebrating and preserving township history. It conveys this history to the public through programs, exhibits, publications and cooperative events.

Join community leaders and advocates for a powerful evening dedicated towards raising awareness and uniting our communities against hate and bias in all forms. 
New Milford's Anti-Bias Symposium will feature a roundtable discussion of experts on legal protections against hate crimes, the importance of incident reporting, and the value of community alliances.
 The Symposium is free and open to in-person attendance.&nbsp; No pre-registration is required. The event will also be live-streamed to the New Milford Public School District's YouTube Channel.

On Saturday afternoon, May 30, at 2:00pm, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Race and Equity (MACORE), will be presenting another segment in their “Hidden Histories, Speaker Series:” a dramatic reading of The DePriest Incident, a play by Charles White, performed by the Kaleidoscope Ensemble Theatre Company. The play is a historical drama about the first Black US congressman of the 20th century, Oscar DePriest, determined to see his wife, Jessie, invited to the White House for First Lady Lou Hoover's social tea party in 1929. It is a dramatization of a story little known and rarely told, yet one that drew significant national attention at the time, presenting an important debate about the most effective political strategy for social change.This powerful&nbsp;staged reading will take place at the Leonia Municipal Center. It is free and open to the public. There will be a reception following the reading. Mark your calendars and join us!
