Mike Kelly To Discuss His New Book, "After Ground Zero," at Teaneck Historical Society Event

The Teaneck Historical Society will sponsor a talk by Mike Kelly, township resident, award-winning author and veteran journalist, about his newest book, “After Ground Zero: Everyday Americans and the Unhealed Scars of 9/11,” Sunday, Nov. 1, beginning 2 p.m. at the Teaneck Township Council Chambers, 818 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ. For the last 25 years, Kelly has been following the lives of a diverse population of people adversely affected by the terrorist attack. They include the loved ones of those killed, first responders, military personnel serving oversees, among numerous others, as they search for answers, policy changes, reparations, accountability and healing. Signed, discounted copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Teaneck Historical Society’s Nov. 1 event.

“We are delighted to have Mike as a guest speaker,” said Jacqueline Kates, Society president. “His expertise and perspective on the tragic events of September 11 are relevant to our lives today. The Teaneck Historical Society is also very grateful to Bookends Bookstore for their generosity in donating 15 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the book to the Society.”

The author of four critically acclaimed books as well as a documentary film consultant and podcast producer, Kelly has been a newspaper columnist and project writer with The Record, now part of the USA Today Network, which publishes NorthJersey.com. During his long and distinguished career, he has covered some of the biggest stories of the past 50 years. These range from the 9/11 attacks to the fraying of race relations over police shootings, the erosion of the “American Dream” among the country’s working class as well as the cultural and economic factors behind voter support for Donald Trump.

Internationally, Kelly has covered the Iraq War, the Israeli Palestinian conflict and the negotiations for peace in Northern Ireland.His assignments also have encompassed the planning of the 9/11 attacks in Malaysia, the struggles to improve health care in Africa and political and religious tensions in Cuba.

He has received numerous awards for his writing and reporting.Among these: Columbia University’s Meyer Berger Prize, honors from the New York City Deadline Club and the New Jersey Press Association, including its prestigious “Journalist of the Year” award for his reporting after the 9/11 attacks.

The Teaneck Historical Society is dedicated to celebrating and preserving township history. It conveys this history to the public through programs, exhibits, publications and cooperative events.
