Popular political thinking has caught up with what the Population Council has known for over a decade: The way to raise a developing nation from poverty is to raise the well-being of its women and girls. Our speaker, Dr. Sajeda Amin, will describe a program that began in Bangladesh to provide girls with access to health and family services, raise the age of marriage, and reduce the practices of dowry and spousal violence. She'll also discuss the differing needs of developing countries: What works in Bangladesh does not always work in Ethiopia or Vietnam.
Dr. Amin has a PhD from Princeton University in sociology and demography. She has worked at the Population Council since 1995 studying problems in developing countries and actively devising remedies for child marriage, spousal violence and other acute gender-based needs. She travels regularly to South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
