Dr. Joseph Chuman, leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County, will again teach his popular course on Major Religions Today: Their Beliefs and Political Influence on the World Scene. The 5-part course is scheduled for Tuesday evenings at 7:30 pm on the following dates: March 1, 8, 15, 29 and April 5th. Classes are held in the Society's meeting house.
Course description.
The past three decades have witnessed a resurgence of religion on the world stage. In numerous countries from India to Israel, from the United States to the Muslim world, religion has allied itself with powerful political forces. This 5-part course will look at religious movements. It will examine the revival of religion in light of globalization and the relationship of religion to violence. The course will include discussions on Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Humanism.
Dr. Chuman has a Ph.D in Religion from Columbia University and has taught courses in that field and in human rights at Barnard College, The Graduate School of Columbia University, Hunter College, Fairleigh Dickinson University and the United Nations for Peace in Costa Rica. He lectures frequently to public audiences on contemporary social issues, philosophy and religion, and he has been published extensively in newspapers, magazines of opinion and various encyclopedias.
