North Jersey Scholastic Championship Regatta 2012

A premier Championship Regatta for northern New Jersey high school boys and girls crew teams will be held on Bergen County’s Overpeck Lake on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The regatta is organized by the Teaneck Rowing Club (TRC), which has been rowing and training on the Overpeck in cooperation with the County since 2010. TRC sponsors both the Leonia and Teaneck High School Crew Teams, who will host the event on their home course. TRC is expecting up to 20 New Jersey high school teams who will compete for the inaugural North Jersey Championship. This will be the first-ever scholastic crew competition held on this historic Overpeck Lake.

The day will begin with Columbia, Yale, and Penn competing for two of rowing’s biggest trophies, the prestigious Blackwell Cup for heavyweights, which had its start in 1927, and the Dodge Cup for lightweights, now in its 57th consecutive year.  The college teams will begin the day of rowing races at 9:00 am, beginning with the freshman events and, alternating between lightweight and heavyweights, concluding with the varsity races for the respective Cups.

Northern New Jersey’s high school rowing teams traditionally compete on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River and on Cooper River in Camdem, NJ. The Overpeck Lake and its surrounding new County Park, which opened in 2010, provides ideal rowing conditions with its straight 2000-meter course and elevated spectator viewing areas. The Overpeck Lake delivers a new and more convenient venue for Bergen County’s crew teams.
