Public discussion of social media and the Egyptian revolt has often oversimplified the processes that produced this event. Power is seen as divided in two: pharaonic power to shut down communications vs. "people-power" to mobilize via social media. This presentation complicates this story by examining recent developments in US public diplomacy and social movements. Ultimately, we have to develop new tools for analyzing and evaluating transformations in media and power.
