Local Student Earns Scholarship at Siemens Competition

November event took place at MIT

Ilana Teicher, a senior at Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls, was named a regional finalist in the Siemens Competition in Science, Mathematics and Technology. Out of a record number of more than 1,900 projects, Teicher’s project was chosen to advance to one of the six regional competitions, which took place at MIT in November. She won a college scholarship for her work.

Teicher conducted research last summer at the Garcia Center at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her project is titled “Using Gold and Palladium Alloy Nanoparticle Catalysts as a Novel Means of Improving the Power Output Efficiency of Hydrogen Fuel Cells.” She competed at MIT Nov. 11-12 in front of a panel of judges for the national finalists.

“The research that I did on hydrogen fuel cells showed me that a green Earth is possible, and it inspired me to work toward that goal,” Teicher said.

Ma’ayanot juniors Eliana Applebaum and Ariella Applebaum, who are twins, were named semi-finalists.

“It was inspiring to discover that an abstract concept such as biodiesel fuel can be applied to everyday life,” Eliana said.

Ariella stated, “Doing this research made me realize the path I want to take in life.”

Ma'ayanot Principal Rivka Kahan expressed great pride at the achievements of her students.

“We are very proud of Ilana, Ariella and Eliana for the disciplined work, creative and critical thought, and rigorous method that they have devoted to their science research work,” she said. “Their success in the Siemens competition reflects the personal and intellectual qualities that they bring to all of their academic pursuits, and as such is a source of great pride to all of us at Ma'ayanot.”
