NJ Connect for Recovery to Host Insurance Navigation Seminar
NJ Connect for Recovery to Host Free Insurance Navigation Seminar for Substance Use Disorder Treatment

NJ Connect for Recovery (NJCR), a service of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey (MHANJ), will host a free, educational Insurance Seminar at the Johnson Public Library at 274 Main Street in Hackensack, N.J. from 7PM – 8PM on Tuesday, May 22. Facilitated by NJ Connect for Recovery Insurance Specialist, Claudia Beljean, the seminar will cover a range of topics pertaining to navigating insurance to secure treatment for a substance use disorder.
NJ Connect for Recovery was established by the Mental Health Association in NJ as a free, confidential call line focused on helping individuals and families coping with substance use disorders achieve recovery by connecting them with Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors, highly-trained Family Peer Specialists, and Insurance Specialists. NJ Connect for Recovery also offers a variety of educational programming to help New Jersey residents navigate the complex system of care and provide them with the tools they need to support their loved ones throughout the treatment and recovery processes.
“The questions we get most frequently on the call line have to do with navigating the insurance landscape,” said Claudia Beljean, Insurance Specialist, NJ Connect for Recovery. “Often, families have difficulty understanding what’s covered, how to optimize out-of-pocket cost savings, and how to fight back if coverage is denied for treatment. Unfortunately, as the opioid crisis continues to deeply impact our communities, we recognized a far-reaching need for programs like this Insurance Seminar. We developed the program to help families manage and understand the financial aspect of addiction treatment, an issue that often gets swept under the rug.”

The Insurance Seminar will provide families and individuals with vital resources and information to help them identify in-network providers to increase cost savings and understand their policies as well as the levels of care that will be covered. Stuart H. Weiner, Esq., Senior Attorney of the Community Health Law Project (CHLP), will also be on hand to explain the appeals process if coverage for treatment is denied. The free seminar will address the following topics:
- Current laws regarding substance use disorder treatment and what private insurance is required to cover
- "In-network" exceptions for private insurance
- Information on the appeals process in the event coverage is denied
- Questions to ask treatment providers when selecting a program and how to identify red flags
As the first of three planned installments throughout the state, the Hackensack Insurance Seminar will help New Jersey residents understand their rights when seeking treatment and answer any questions they may have regarding the insurance process. NJ Connect for Recovery will host two additional seminars in different regions in the state in the coming months in order to make this valuable program accessible to as many New Jersey communities as possible. Once finalized the additional locations and information on other free workshops and seminars can be found at: www.njconnectforrecovery.org/free-workshops/.
