School Board Member to Resign for Council Seat

Teaneck Board of Education trustee Henry Pruitt will resign from the school board effective July 1, to be sworn in as a Township Council member.

The Board of Education will officially accept his resignation at the June 13 public meeting, according to a district press release. to his first four-year term on the town’s governing body.

“The Board and Administration acknowledges and thanks Dr. Pruitt for his selfless service to the children, parents and taxpayers of Teaneck and wishes him well in his new role as a member of the Township Committee,” the press release said.

State law prohibits Pruitt from serving on both the council and school board. He is serving his third term on the school board and is a former board president and principal.

Pruitt’s spot must be filled within 65 days from when his seat becomes vacant. Residents interested in applying can submit a resume and letter of interest to District Business Administrator and Board Secretary Robert Finger by June 22.

The replacement will serve until the November election and can run for the remainder of Pruitt’s term, which expires in December 2013.

The Board expects to conduct interviews before the June 27 special public meeting and appoint a new member at the August 22 special public meeting, the release said.

Requirements to serve on the Board of Education are: 

• Must be able to read and write
• Must be eighteen years (18) of age or older
• Must be a United States citizen and a resident of Teaneck Township for at least one year
• Must be a registered voter in Teaneck Township
• Must have no interest in any contract with, or claim against the Board
• Must not hold office as mayor or member of the municipal governing body
• Must not simultaneously hold two elective offices
• Must not be disqualified from membership for the conviction of certain crimes and must undergo a criminal history background investigation through the NJ State Department of Education
