Backstroke Swimmer, 41, Earns Title

Toms River man competed with OCY Masters Tiger Sharks

Gene Imbemba, 41, of Silverton section of Toms River earned swimming accolades in the backstroke at a recent Ocean County YMCA meet.

The former Rutgers University student athlete and member of the OCY Masters Tiger Sharks earned the NJ State Masters 200 Backstroke title (age group 40-44) at the OCY NJ State Unofficial Masters Championship February 12.

Imbemba was among one of 163 athletes ranging from 23-78 competing in Sunday’s meet held at the .

“My goal was to beat the previous NJ State Masters 200 backstroke record of 2:11 and I clocked in at 2:08.96. I trained hard and accomplished the goal I set for myself. It felt great to be back in competition after being out of that circuit for close to 20 years,” Imbemba said in a prepared statement.
