Crash Closes Hooper Avenue In Toms River, Knocks Out Power

TOMS RIVER, NJ — Hooper Avenue is closed in Toms River on Saturday morning following a crash that brought down wires across the road, Toms River police said.

Hooper Avenue is closed in both directions at South Shore Drive, just north of Fischer Boulevard, police said, and multiple traffic lights are out.

In addition, there were about 1,900 homes and businesses without power as of 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

A photo published by Ocean County Scanner News shows a tractor-trailer tangled in wires with a snapped pole.

The Ocean County Sheriff's Office issued an alert that said the Toms River Police Department's non-emergency number is not working because of the power outages and non-emergency calls should be avoided until further notice.

"We are assisting Toms River Police Department due to a power outage near South Shore and Hooper Avenue. Power should be restored approximately 2 p.m.," the sheriff's department said.

The sheriff's department said multiple traffic signals are out but it was unclear how far the outages are from the crash site.
