TOMS RIVER, NJ — From the start, the Toms River Field of Dreams project has been about bringing the community together. This week, restaurants throughout Toms River are coming together for another fundraising push, in hopes of closing the final gap on funding for the project.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, restaurants will be donating a portion of the food bill from diners to the Toms River Field of Dreams, the recreation facility for those with special needs that will be built next to the Toms River Youth Services facility on North Bay Avenue.

Christian Kane, the organizer and driving force behind the project, said they are about $160,000 shy of fully funding the $2.2 million project that will be built on 3 acres of land at Bay Lea Park. Support for the project has come from all over the area, including a $50,000 donation in August from New York Mets third baseman Todd Frazier.

The site for the project was cleared in March when NJ Site & Utility Contractors of Jackson donated its time and equipment to do the work.

On Tuesday, the Toms River Township Council is expected to give the go-ahead for township engineer Robert J. Chankalian to submit an application on behalf of the Field of Dreams to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection seeking the formal permits and authorization for the project. Toms River previously applied for $900,000 in Green Acres funding through the DEP to help pay for the project.
