Dodgeball Tourney Rings Up Big Support For Toms River PD
The event was a fundraiser for police department riders in the Police Unity Tour this spring.
TOMS RIVER, NJ — There were the Average Joes and Team Globo Gym. There was Duck Duck Goose and In Da Face. There were businesses — Home Depot, Down The Hatchet, Big Dodge Energy.
But there was one thing that stood out above all at the first Toms River PBA Dodgeball Tournament in the gym at Toms River High School East on Friday night: the community support for Toms River's police department.
The dodgeball tournament, created by Toms River Police Officer Sam Sutter, was designed as a fundraiser for officers participating in the Police Unity Tour, which travels from New Jersey to Washington, DC, each spring to honor fallen officers. Each officer participating in the tour must raise $2,200.

Sutter and a group of other officers and volunteers worked to put the event together for the Toms River PBA 137 and on Friday night, 50 teams took the floor for a night of dodgeball, supported by various area businesses and organizations. The Toms River Elks Lodge 1875, Crunch Fitness, Structural Solutions and Accent Landscaping each provided financial support, while a number of other businesses provided raffle prizes and other items. Capone's Pizza sold pizza at the event, and there was face painting, a bounce house and a balloon artist.
