TOMS RIVER, NJ — A 12-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after she was hit by a van while crossing Vaughn Avenue on her bicycle, Toms River police said.

The girl was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune by Toms River Community Service Officers as a precautionary measure following the accident that happened about 3:15 p.m., said Jillian Messina, Toms River police media specialist.

The girl was riding north on Vaughn Avenue when she tried to cross the road near Somerset Drive and was hit by a van owned by 21Plus and driven by Charles Santoriello Jr., 34, of Toms River, an employee of the company, Messina said.

The preliminary investigation revealed Santoriello was not at fault for the accident, she said. There were no other injuries.

The accident remains under investigated by Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Bartoshek, she said.
