TOMS RIVER, NJ — The U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a dangerous step back for women that U.S. Rep. Chris Smith pushed for decades, Democrat Matt Jenkins said.

"How many women will die because of this decision? How many will suffer long-term health complications," said Jenkins, a Democrat seeking to unseat Smith and represent New Jersey's 4th District. "This decision stems from a decades-long strategy to strip women of access to reproductive health care and autonomy. It’s a direct attack on women and families."

"It’s no secret that Congressman Chris Smith chairs the House Pro-Life Caucus. And, for over 40 years, Chris Smith has had one goal – roll back protections for women," Jenkins said.

Jenkins was born in New Jersey and grew up in Toms River, and attended the Toms River Regional School District. He said he wants to push back against the rollbacks and make sure women across the country, including in states where abortion is now banned due to so-called trigger laws.

"I stand with millions of Americans calling on Congress to codify Roe v. Wade and return these constitutional protections to women throughout our country," he said.

Jenkins, who lives in Colts Neck with his wife and two children, was unopposed in the Democratic primary. He attended Ocean County College and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology.

"This November, the voters of NJ-04 will have a choice between two campaigns — ours, which stands for a woman’s right to choose, and Chris Smith’s, a campaign centered around a career politician who has spent the last 40 years attempting to stack the courts against American women," he said.
