Learn the History of Sunflowers and How to Grow Them in Your Home Garden at the Barnegat Library

BARNEGAT – Think sunflowers may be a good addition to your home garden? Learn about the different varieties of sunflowers and how to grow them with a Rutgers Master Gardener at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 29 at the Barnegat Branch of the Ocean County Library. Seeds and pots of soil will be provided to start your own sunflower plant from seed.

The sunflower is an American native plant. How it spread around Europe and Russia and was developed into one of the top 3 agricultural crops in the world is a fascinating story.

Noreen Baris of the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present the program. Rutgers Master Gardeners are trained and certified volunteers who assist Rutgers Cooperative Extension personnel in providing research-based information on sustainable horticultural practices to Ocean County residents.

Baris has been a Master Gardener for 15 years. She was also an elementary school teacher for 30 years and ran a garden club for the students. She then spent years researching and developing this presentation. She has a huge vegetable garden and helps instruct new Master Gardeners in proper gardening techniques.
