Memorial Service Announced For South Toms River Mayor Greg Handshy

Greg Handshy died Sunday at the age of 66. He was a Vietnam veteran and had been South Toms River's mayor since 2019.

SOUTH TOMS RIVER, NJ — Friends and loved ones of late South Toms River Mayor Greg Handshy will have a memorial gathering in September.

Handshy died Sunday, Aug. 21 at the age of 66. He had been mayor of the borough since 2019, and served as a councilman for two separate terms before that.

Handshy's cause of death has not been publicly released. He died at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

A memorial gathering is Sunday, Sept. 11 from 4-6 p.m. at Anderson Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River, according to Handshy's obituary.

Handshy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley; his sister Kathee Rankin and brother-in-law Frank; and six nieces and nephews, the obituary says. His parents, Emery and Evelyn Handshy, and his sister Beth predeceased him.

Handshy grew up in Toms River's Silverton section and lived in South Toms River for more than 30 years, the obituary says.

Before entering local politics, Handshy served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, his obituary says. He began as an apprentice pipe fitter in 1977 with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 9 in Englishtown and retired in 2012.

"He enjoyed golfing, fishing, Island Beach State Park and walks with his dog Cedrick," the obituary says.
