TOMS RIVER, NJ — An unfounded threat caused a delay Monday morning for students at Toms River Intermediate East as authorities thoroughly checked the building, Toms River police said.

Police said they were investigating "a potential swatting incident/threat" at Intermediate East on Hooper Avenue received before school was scheduled to start at 7:55 a.m.

Students were not permitted into the building while the area was being thoroughly checked, police said in a post on the department's Facebook page.

Police did not release the nature of the threat or say how it was communicated.

The area was cleared and the threat deemed unfounded, police said in a 9:30 a.m. Facebook update.

"Thank you to all students, staff, and parents for your corporation and patience while we worked with school administrators to investigate and ensure the safety of everyone," police said.
