TOMS RIVER, NJ — When Kathleen Brew began protecting children crossing the street to go to school in Toms River, Cabbage Patch dolls were the hot Christmas toy and the final episode of M.A.S.H aired on television.

Forty years later Brew finally decided it was time to retire, and she was honored at a recent Toms River Township Council meeting.

"After spending 40 years protecting the children in Toms River, she retired this year. We will miss her smile and grace here at the police department, and her students are sure to miss her each day as they walk to school!" Police Chief Mitch Little said.
