Toms River Little League advances; All-Star football game in the works

This last week saw plenty of sports action, highlighted by the Toms River American Little League All-Star team advancing further in the winner’s bracket.

On Sunday the Little League team downed their Jackson counterparts 10-3, led by Dylan Danielson’s 4 2/3 innings of work to start the game, and an offensive output that saw seven homeruns.  With the win Toms River advances to take on the Brick Little League All-Star team in the winner’s bracket on Tuesday.

The Ocean County Running Club continued their summer running series with their second week of sponsored 5k runs.  Scott Davern posted the top time overall for the run, clocking in at 17:53.  The top female time was recorded by Danielle Leavitt with a time of 19:02.

And in the youth division Jake Howell put in the best time for the second straight week, improving on last week’s finish by two seconds with a time of 18:51.

The running club resumes on Tuesday night at Winding River Park with the 5k run open to anyone wishing to participate.  Registration begins at 6:15 pm, and is $5 for club members, $6 for non-members.  The race begins at 6:45 pm.

On the waters the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association held the third week of events in their summer championship series on Saturday.  The winners are as follows:

Are you ready for some football?  Football fans will get a chance to see some live action this week, as on Thursday at 7 pm the 34th edition of the U.S. Army All Shore Gridiron Classic will kick off from Toms River High School North.  The annual contest pits the all-star seniors from Ocean County high schools squaring off against the all star seniors from Monmouth County high schools.

Ocean County will be looking to avenge last year’s loss, as the Monmouth all-stars got the best of them in a 12-10 squeaker of a victory.  Monmouth County leads the series all time, with an 18-14-1 advantage.

Admission is $10, although free for veterans and active service members.
