East Hanover, NJ: The Morris Habitat for Humanity Restore was
honored with a special award at the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority
26th Annual Recycling Awards Dinner this April. The “Restoring Our Habitat” Award recognized
the efforts of the ReStore to promote ways to ReCycle, ReThink, and ReDo.
The Morris County MUA Recycling
Office referenced the fact that over time, the Morris Habitat ReStore has
expanded its focus to include the public in terms of helping to educate,
encourage and promote recycling and reuse.
The annual “Go Green, Save Green” event held every October, not only
offers additional savings on the already discounted merchandise, but also
includes vendors that offer an wide array of “green” home options. Further, these events allow participants to
donate old cell phones, electronics, eyeglasses, clothing, inkjet and toner
cartridges and even blood! Partnerships
with local organizations such as College Hunks Hauling Junk and 1-800-Got-Junk
assure that reusable household items are dropped off at the ReStore, rather
than landfilled. ReStore Director, Rick
Ostberg, said that, “these partnerships have meant that approximately 48
truckloads per year, which equates to between 70 to 100 tons of merchandise,
are sold at the ReStore rather than being treated as trash.”
Recently, the ReStore
has begun to work with other non-profit agencies to identify families who are
in dire need, to help with furnishing their homes. These families are invited to the ReStore on
“Give Away Day” to come and pick out items they might need, at no charge.
