Apartment Set on Fire After Man Falls Asleep With Cigarette

Police evacuated residents from apartment building due to smoke condition.

A apartment at 180 Main Street caught on fire at 12:58 a.m. Thursday after police said a resident had allegedly fallen asleep while smoking a cigarette in bed.

and officials responded to the apartment, where the 31-year-old-male who rents the unit told police what had happened.

After he had fallen asleep with the cigarette, police said a small fire erupted in the apartment and appeared to have been contained in the bedroom. Heavy smoke conditions were caused by the fire, so authorities evacuated residents throughout the building until the smoke cleared.

Police said the resident had sustained a minor burn to his hand while attempting to extinguish the fire before responders arrived. He was transported to Chilton Memorial Hospital.

Police said no other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
