That Sweet Stuff

This reward is simultaneously destroying our health and happiness.

Food is always there for us, it always tastes the same way and we can choice how much of it we want.  It makes us feel good, gives us a sense of comfort, and we use it as a reward when we’ve achieved a certain goal of ours.  This reward though is simultaneously destroying our health and happiness.  This isn’t something that happens overnight.  It isn’t the product of one bad decision or having dessert here or there.  It’s a slow destructive process and the negative health effects accumulate over time.

If there is one thing you absolutely need to eliminate from your diet it is sugar.  Sugar, along with fat and salts, are what gives us that sense of comfort and happiness as we eat the food.  They are also the same thing that makes us miserable when we’re done eating or sometimes in the middle of feasting.  You are guaranteed to feel bad for one of two reasons.

The first reason is you are trying to be health conscious and you know you shouldn’t be eating the food.  You get down on yourself maybe while you’re eating it but definitely if not then, soon after you’re done because you gave into temptation again.  This is a food addiction.  You are consciously aware that you shouldn’t be eating it because it’s bad for your health and moving you away from your goals but you don’t have the self control to stop.

The second reason is that when you consume sugar on a daily basis (the average American eats 22 teaspoons of sugar per day) your body can not operate at optimum levels.  Sugar is an anti-nutrient.  What that means is it has no nutritional value and depletes the body of vitamins and minerals.  When our bodies try to metabolize it for energy we have to use our calcium, magnesium, potassium, and chromium.  By using our supplies of minerals and vitamins we leave the body weaker than before. 

Once weaker, we are more prone to illness, depression, digestive problems, sluggishness, and difficulty concentrating.  These are all states of being that are completely anti-happy and functioning.  By eliminating this one ingredient from your diet you are guaranteed to improve your life dramatically.  Not only will you lose weight, but you will wake up with more energy, sustain that energy throughout the day, and have an overall higher sense of well being.
