Hail to Kale!

One of my new best friends is kale.  Kale has been getting a lot of buzz lately as a "super food" so I tried to find out ways I could incorporate this cabbage-like vegetable into my diet.  I've discovered 3 ways of enjoying kale: 1. in the form of kale "chips", 2. sauteed w/sesame oil, ginger, garlic and 3. blended into a breakfast smoothies w/bananas, berries, almond milk, oats.  Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamins K, vitamin C and rich in calcium.  Kale has been said to prevent cancer, lower cholesterol and decrease absorption of dietary fat. (Source Wikipedia)

I'll be meeting w/my new coach all this week and I have to say, I've never felt more confident than I do right now!  In our last session she told me that she was going to have me breathing bilaterally (on both sides) whereas I had only been breathing on my right side because being right-dominant it was just easier.  Well in just 30 minutes I was literally breathing every 3rd stroke...amazing!  We also worked on shoulder rotation and stroke form so I'm moving a lot faster and more efficiently in the water now.  In our next session she said she wants to work on power...I can't wait.

After lunch I spent a little time in the lake to get a feel for open water swimming...blech is all I can say to that.  Being so used to swimming in the pool where you can see to the bottom, imagine being blind and that's what swimming in open water feels like.  Not to mention the mysterious algae and stuff that you end up stepping in.  Geez, I really sound Monk OCD huh?  Well, much can be said for chlorinated water.  Whatever, I better get over the murky water real quick considering that's the kind of environment we'll be swimming in for the Pequannock Tri!
