Two Charged With Possession After Marijuana Allegedly Found in Vehicle

Police said Newark man and woman allegedly admitted to smoking in vehicle.

 A Newark man and woman were arrested in Wednesday after said they allegedly admitted to smoking Spice and marijuana in their vehicle.

Both were charged with possession of marijuana while the driver of the vehicle, Jamie M. Smith, 26, was also charged with DWI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a vehicle, careless driving and driving with unsafe tires. 

Police said they smelled burnt marijuana in the vehicle, in which Dwight A. Lacosta, 28, was a passenger, after stopping Smith’s 2004 Dodge on Kakeout Road at 10:06 a.m. for equipment violations. When asked about the burnt marijuana smell coming from the vehicle, police said Smith handed Sgt. David Crouthamel a glass container and told him she had smoked Spice,, a half hour prior.

Police said Lacosta allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana in the car the night before. Police said Smith and Lacosta were both removed from the car and a search revealed a small amount of marijuana on the floor and in Smith’s purse, as well as rolling papers.

Smith and Lacosta were arrested and transported to the police station, where they were processed and released with tickets to appear in court at a later date.

Joe Zambrano, 49, of Ringwood, was arrested Monday on charges of hindering apprehension and driving with a suspended license after police said he allegedly used a false name after being pulled over.

Police pulled over Zambrano’s 2007 Ford Wagon on Route 23 South at 8:13 a.m. after a license plate check allegedly revealed that the owner’s license was suspended. When asked for identification, Zambrano allegedly presented police with an international driver’s license and identified himself as William Nino. Police said he later admitted that his name was Jorge Zambrano and that he had previously had his license revoked for being convicted of DWI.

Zambrano was arrested and later released with a ticket to appear in court at a later date.
