7,600 Homes Without Power, Traffic Lights Out In Ocean Township

Police are urging motorists to slow down and to follow instructions as the outage is affecting traffic signals.

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ — More than 7,600 homes and businesses were without power Friday afternoon in Ocean Township, creating traffic headaches as traffic signals are affected, Ocean Township police said.

The cause of the power outage was not immediately known, but police tweeted that the outage had knocked out numerous traffic lights in the township.

In addition, the outage had resulted in "numerous calls for service" in addition to the traffic congestion, police said.

"Please use caution while traveling through the township," police said. Please slow down and follow the detours, don't drive through the coned intersections."

Jersey Central Power and Light crews were en route but there was no estimate of when power might be restored as of 5 p.m.

There were additional outages nearby, including one on Route 71 in Long Branch that police there said resulted from an accident that took out three utility poles.
