February 15. 1933: President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt was appearing at an event in Miami, Florida, when a Paterson man, Giuseppe Zangara, attempted to shoot him. Zangara missed Roosevelt but mortally wounded Chicago mayor Anton Cernak, seated next to the president-elect. Zangara was later executed for the murder of Cernak.
