The average 19th century person ate a pound of it a day. It was essential for survival. Since most did not have ovens in their homes, the importance of a baker to the well-being of a community was elevated. They were making, after all, the stuff of life.
on Sunday will demonstrate the delicate art of 19th century Brick Beehive Oven Baking, giving village-goers a feel for what it was like for the bakers of 170 years ago.
