Central School Prepares for Walk-A-Thon

Annual charity event this year raises $11,000 to battle juvenile diabetes

Students, faculty and staff at Central School are set to step off for the annual Walk-A-Thon Wednesday.

The annual charity event this year has raised about $11,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting Type 1 diabetes, according to event organizeer Doreen Brown.

Juvenile, or Type 1, Diabetes is a chronic disease which prevents the pancreas from producting insulin. There are more than 1 million affected by Juvenile Diabetes, including third grade Central school student Jake Walsh.

Students have been collecting sponsors for weeks and will walk tomorrow, beginning at 1:15 p.m. A rain date of Thursday is planned in case of inclement weather, Browns aid.

Students will walk either a 2- or 4-lap course, according to grade level. Morning kindergarten student will walk at 10:30 a.m.
