Crimson Knights Recap: Hockey Team on a Roll

A weekly recap of the Wall High School sports teams

The Wall High School ice hockey team has scored 17 goals and beaten two of its top divisional rivals in the last week, moving into third place in the Shore Conference B Division.

The Crimson Knights (4-2-1) romped over Toms River North 8-4 on Monday, then scored a high-flying 9-6 win over Howell on Wednesday night, avenging an earlier 6-4 loss to the Rebels. Matt Marabeti recorded hat tricks in both games against Howell, and in Wednesday’s victory Jeff Morgan scored four goals for the Knights.

Wall opened the season with a win over Point Boro, tied St. John Vianney the defeated Toms River South. Wall’s only other loss was a 5-2 setback against Brick.

In boys basketball, the Knights fell to Brick Memorial, 79-73, in double overtime in the opening round of the WOBM Christmas Classic. Derek Gardner had 12 of his 15 points in the second half as Wall rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit and sent the game to overtime on a basket by Kevin Waters (9 points). The teams dueled through the first overtime, before Brick Memorial secured the win. Jordan Pettita scored 17 points for the seventh-seeded Knights, who face Toms River East on Monday at 12:45 in the consolation round. In regular season play, the Knights fell to Jackson Liberty at home, 58-45, despite 10 points from Gardner, and 8 points each from Pettita and Brendan Barcas.

In girls basketball, the Lady Knights, seeded 13th, fell in the first round of the WOBM Christmas Classic, 60-44, to fourth-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven. Jessica Louro was the high scorer for the Knights with 10 points. In regular season action, Wall lost to Holmdel, 64-44, in the teams’ season opener on Friday, Dec. 16, when they were unable to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit. The Lady Knights bounced back with a victory Dec. 20, 44-35, over Jackson Liberty, with Louro and Rakel Dziobek scoring 12 points apiece.

In wresting, the Knights lost their season opener to Jackson Liberty, 41-18. Dan Kinsella scored a 3-1 decision over Liberty’s Dominck Regina at 126; Drew Donner posted a 4-2 decision over Brandon Roman at 160, Tyler Hetzel beat Chris Cruz at 195 and , Don Hamill's pin of Richard Angeles at 220 and Aldo Guisse edged Mike McKenzie, 1-0, at heavyweight for Wall. Don Hamill had the lone pin for Wall, over Richard Angeles at 220.
