Update: Foul Odor Leads To Decomposed Body Discovery

Police were investigating the scene on Squankum Road in Lakewood Friday morning.

A foul odor led investigators to the scene Thursday night of a decomposed body that had been found inside an Ocean County residence.

At approximately 8:32 p.m., police received a call from a property manager for the Lakewood residence saying there may be a deceased individual inside the residence. Employees of the business next door to the Squankum Road residence reported the foul odor emanating from the structure, according to the prosecutor‘s office.

When the property manager made entry, he saw what he believed to be a dead person. Lakewood police arrive, entered the home and found a decomposing body, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The Lakewood Detective Bureau, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI assisted in the death investigation.

The man was located in a bedroom in a state of moderate to severe decomposition. There were no obvious signs of outward trauma or foul play noted.

The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and pronounced the man dead at 10:23 p.m. The body was transported to Community Medical Center pending a post-mortem examination.

Most recently, the deceased man was observed in the last two weeks at the residence. The residence was secured pending the outcome of the autopsy, according to the prosecutor’s office.
