Funeral Teaches 19th Century Customs
Allaire Village hosts the funeral of Frances Duncan Allaire
The funeral customs of the 19th century were re-enacted this weekend as the re-created the funeral of Frances Duncan Allaire on Sunday.
Wife of owner James P. Allaire, Frances Allaire died from an unknown illness in March of 1836, and each year the historic village honors her memory by re-enacting the funeral services.
“His wife unfortunately got sick and passed away at their home here,” historic interpreter Hannah Tichansky has said. “Everyone goes up to Mr. Allaire’s mansion and they pay their respects. We have volunteers dressed up as the family and recreate that.”
